Water is essential for survival and it carries out four basic functions in the body (LibreTexts, July 8, 2021, “Functions of water”):

  1. It is needed to transport nutrients via the bloodstream, and it helps eliminate waste from the body.
  2. It allows chemical reactions in the body to happen, such as metabolic functions.
  3. It lubricates and protects in the form of secretions and fluids.
  4. It helps regulate temperature in the body.

Staying hydrated is crucial for good health and our body will let us know if it’s running low on water. Possible signs of dehydration are: bad breath, dry skin, craving sweets, headaches, or dark yellow/orange urine (it should be mostly clear). You should consult your doctor if you experience any of the above symptoms.

Try these tips for keeping water flowing into your body:

  • Keep your favorite water bottle or glass nearby so you can sip often throughout the day. Add a slice of lemon or orange for extra flavor.
  • Drink natural herbal teas without any sugar added. We love ginger tea and adding a sprinkle of cayenne pepper, turmeric and lemon adds delicious nutrients to your drink.
  • If you drink fruit juice or soda with your meals, try replacing it with water for at least one meal a day. Then work your way up to eliminating sugary drinks altogether. Remember, sodas typically contain about 12 teaspoons of sugar per 12 oz. can.
  • Use an app to remind you to drink water if you tend to forget. They are user friendly and useful.
